Bringing Home a Baby Bumble Bee

September 11, 2019

By: Barb Holtz

Remember that childhood tune?

I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee. Won't my mommy be so proud of me. I'm bringing home a baby bumble bee. Ouch! He stung me.

I've been singing a number of oldies but goodies to my grandkids of late, realizing many of these innocent melodies are far from innocent. This is one I karaoked with one of their toys. Why does the bee get a bad rap? The kid was clasping a bee in his or her hand. Stinging is a given!

First off, male bees don't sting so at least get the biology right. Second, our conversation with bees should go more like this:

I remember when I used to see a bee and go, YIKES a bee! And now I'm all, Oh WOW! A bee, hi! You ok there? Need anything? Can I get you a drink? A cushion? Wanna borrow the car?

This received a wide grinned smiling emoji when shared by my daughter. Bees dot the news in dribs and drabs as one of the canaries in our climate change coal mine. And rightfully so. We'd be lost without them.

As I sit on my patio musing with you today, I marvel at the black and yellow shoppers going from bloom to bloom on my Cup Plant. A stellar, sunny afternoon for an outing as they buzz high in the sky blossoms for a dusting of pollen and nectar cocktail. So simple, so ancient, so essential.

I've said it before and I'll continue to say it again: What you plant in your yard matters. This is not a game in a child's song for the bee. Collecting isn't a choice but a neccesity. Not a drudgery, a calling. Bumbles are dependent upon one another to follow the path nature designed. Show them hospitality and gratitude for a job well done. Don't bring home a baby bumble bee. Invite one in with a garden fit for a queen...rather, a worker.

Can you find the bumble bee on this Wild Senna bloom? Quite the camouflaged outfit!
