Everything I've Ever Learned About HOPE I Learned From Plants

December 28, 2020

By: Barb Holtz

I am going to make an assumption. If you're an OPN Seed patron or just a casual visitor to our website, you have an interest in plants. You may even have a deeper interest in the ecological significance of native flora to pollinators, water and soil conservation or the beauty in local leaf and flower. No matter which category you fall into, you likely see the natural world as important, something to care for.

Yes, It's been crazy. Yes, it's been maddening, sad and lonely. However, if anything came out of 2020, for me, the planet finally got an opportunity to breathe. A well-deserved rest and lesson to humans, hopefully heeded and not forgotten, that there is hope in natural cycles.

Each season has a purpose. Some are hard, some are restful, some are patient, some are exciting. Some are cold, some are dark, some are warm, some are vibrant. But again, each has purpose. Each is a requirement to what comes next. Sure, nature has curveballs that wreak havoc. Nature's harshness cannot be underrated. Still, even in destruction, resilience is offered. Whether a simple cycle or a catastrophe, the "next" is the hope and promise.

So I invite you to tell 2020 "don't let the door hit you on the way out" but also give a thankful nod for the lessons and joy. And, my plant loving friends, don't forget to breathe.
