If You Plant It....They Will Come

July 15, 2015

We've been featuring #wildflowerwednesday every week on social media now for a while and wanted to share this story on the blog too...Enjoy!

If You Plant It, They Will Come...

One of the members of our staff lives in an urban area on a fairly busy street. Three years ago, they made the conscientious decision to turn their mulch beds into small prairie areas. Over these years, they have watched their prairie come to life with beautiful blooms and experienced an uptick in different species of birds, bees, butterflies and moths, species they had never seen with the mulch beds and the annuals and perennials they traditionally planted.

Yesterday, while out admiring the plants, they noticed that the female and male American Goldfinches that have taken up residence in a nearby tree perched on Ox-Eye Sunflower. The birds only started appearing two years ago when the prairie was first beginning to bloom.

The highlight of their day appeared in the form of a Hummingbird Moth. This Snowberry clearwing showed up to feast on Wild Bergamot and stayed long enough for them to snap a few (if grainy) pics.

Moral of the story: No matter how big or small the area, you can plant native species. Native grasses and wildflowers make for beautiful landscaping and also attract and benefit wildlife and pollinators, but reduce the need for watering, fertilizers and pesticides.

If you're interested in learning more about how you can plant native species in your yard, stop out and see us this Saturday at Springfield Bog. We'd love to chat!
