Table Talk: Can I Spread This Seed Now?

February 8, 2019

By: Barb Holtz

Throughout the year, OPN Seed (Ohio Prairie Nursery) offers information and products at a variety of events. When I staff our table, I have the pleasure of swapping garden stories, catching up with past OPN patrons and fielding queries about native plant landscaping. This series answers some of the most common questions.

That depends. The time to spread seed depends on a few things:

  • What time of year is it?
  • What seed did you purchase?
  • Do you have the seeding area prepped?

A general rule of thumb is to sow native seed late fall/early winter (when soil temperatures are below 50 degrees) through spring. If it's after mid-June, wait till fall. If the species you purchased requires stratification or cold-treatment for germination, definitely spread late fall through winter. Stratification requirements are available here or you can give us a call if you have questions. No cold treatment necessary? Spring sowing will suffice. Our Quick Growing Wildflowers Mix is a good one to plant in the spring.

Every seed sown should fall on a prepared area. This is a space clear of competition from aggressive weeds and/or turf grass. Bare, UNTILLED soil or hardwood mulch with a soil-like consistency is best. I cannot stress site prep enough. Did I say make sure your site is prepped? Don't forget to prep your sowing site. Site. Prep. We'll talk more about that next time. Can't wait until then? Here's a link to our How To Section.

We promise not to email you unless it's really worth it! Sign up for our mailing list today!
