All members of the milkweed genus are host plant for Monarch Butterfly larva. Female Monarchs lay eggs on the leaves which hatch out into the familiar Monarch caterpillars.
Signs of caterpillar activity can be seen as munched out areas of the leaves. It is also an important species for other pollinators and bees. It provides perching places for numerous grassland birds.
Common Milkweed has been found historically in fields and meadows and along fence rows and road right of ways. It is adapted to a wide variety of soil types and moisture gradients.
