American Bellflower is an annual that can be easily identified by its bright blue flowers that grow upwards from a central stem. This species grows well in areas that receive at least four hours of sunlight a day and is attractive to long-tongued bees. It grows well in a wide variety of soil conditions and can tolerate fluctuating moisture levels in the soil. Finished heights on this species usually range between two to five feet.
This would make a great addition to flower beds or partially shaded areas of your landscape. Keep in mind, this annual would need to be re-seeded each year.
How To Plant American Bellflower:
Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in partial shade to full sun. Typically produces blooms the first growing season. It is an annual species and will need to be replanted every growing season.
