Cool season native grasses like Virginia and Nodding Wild Rye typically emerge in spring when soil temps begin to warm up. They provide structure and habitat and the foundation for the warm season native grasses that appear later in the growing season. These shorter growing species (2 to 5 feet) make up a native seed mix that is excellent for turf replacement where less mowing is desired or for creating a low maintenance habitat for wildlife including deer, turkey, rabbits, pheasants and grouse.
Little Bluestem is particularly valuable in this mix since it's the larval host plant for many butterflies and moths.
