Andropogon virginicus - Broom Sedge

Broom Sedge is not a sedge at all, but a member of the grass family. "Broom" comes from the fact that the culms were used to make brooms in some of the southern states.

Reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet, Broom Sedge blooms later in the season and prefers partial shade.

Multiple uses for wildlife include cover, nesting material and seed food for birds. Also provides structure and nesting material for native bees. Leave this one standing tall all fall and winter long. 

How To Plant Broom Sedge Seed:

Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and in early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Can take 3 growing seasons to fully establish.
