A fairly tall sedge reaching up to 3 1/2 feet, consisting of loose tufts and leafy culms.
The seed heads droop over and are very attractive from late spring to mid-summer. The root system is fibrous and rhizomatous.
This sedge often forms colonies of plants. Good for part shade rain gardens where it has some room to grow. Can also be utilized at pond edges and other wetland areas. Very attractive to waterfowl.

How To Plant Common Hop Sedge Seeds:
Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and in early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in partial shade to shade. Can take 3 growing seasons to fully establish.
