In the first half of the growing season, Tall Coreopsis grows moderately without flowers and is generally unnoticed. It can only be identified by its unique leaves. But in late July and August the plant shoots skyward above the tall grasses.
The species is easily grown in prairie restorations and prairie gardens.
Various songbirds consume the seeds in autumn and winter.
How To Plant Tall Coreopsis Seeds:
Direct sow seeds into prepared soil in late fall once soil temps are below 50 degrees (usually mid to late November). Can also be planted in winter during natural freeze/thaw cycles and early spring. Plant shallow, no deeper than 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep and lightly rake to work seed in. Plant in full sun to partial shade. Can take 3 growing seasons to fully establish.
