Purple and Gold

October 3, 2017

By: Barb Holtz

How many of you recall the song, Silver and Gold, sung by the Burl Ives snowman on Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? I close my eyes and clearly picture the jolly man of white gliding along the landscape, singing in the that unmistakable voice while woodland creatures decorate with shiny bulbs and garland. Ahh...a childhood favorite that remains into adulthood...(snap out of the sighing smile of content and back to blogging!)

If I were to compose a song for an autumn animated nature being to carol, it would be Purple and Gold. Leaves always capture the season but lower your eyes from the boughs above to meadows below. Enter New England Aster and goldenrods, Blue Monkshood and Sawtooth Sunflower. Fall is my favorite time of year because of these characters on nature's most colorful stage.

Why are purple and yellow so pleasing to the eye? Because they are complementary colors, opposite each other on the color wheel. Who said color schemes are relegated to bedrooms and wardrobes! Autumn is the season Mother Nature gets her designer on more than any other in my book. Plan your perennial garden to fade into winter with a last hurrah of vibrancy.

Fall is seed time so don't pack away the gardener in you yet. Literally sow the seeds of fall flowers now (when soil temps are below 50 degrees!) As you listen this holiday season to the Burl Ives snowman song, you can smile knowing purple and gold are waiting to enchant.
